Detailed Introduction

What does MIM technology mean?

MIM technology is a novel component‑manufacturing process that integrates plastic injection molding with powder metallurgy.

During the injection molding process, is the metal material melted?

No—only the binder is melted, allowing the powder to flow like a plastic material. Cooling the binder imparts sufficient strength to the part. The part is then sintered to achieve a very high density, meeting its required mechanical properties.

Why use the MIM process?

When a component is difficult to manufacture using conventional machining or casting processes, or when machining would be prohibitively expensive, or when the part has specific material requirements, the MIM process offers distinct advantages.

Which metal materials can be used for production?

Almost all metal alloys can be used in the MIM process, but the commonly employed materials today are stainless steel, iron, tungsten alloys, and cemented carbides. Brass and bronze are not economically viable for this process. Zinc–aluminum alloys are typically processed by die casting.

Will the delivery lead time be very long?

Mold lead times typically range from 4 to 5 weeks, while sample or delivery turnaround is 1 to 2 weeks; delivery schedules can also be adjusted to meet specific customer requirements.

Can MIM technology be used to manufacture any complex product?

MIM technology also has limitations: product dimensions cannot be excessively large, with a typical maximum weight limit of 300 grams; additionally, very thick or very thin cross-sections are likewise constrained.

What equipment is used in the MIM process?

The equipment used in the MIM process includes mixers, injection molding machines, degreasing furnaces, and sintering furnaces, among others.

Can MIM be heat-treated or electroplated?

Like traditionally machined components, MIM parts can undergo heat treatment, polishing, and electroplating.
